Differences in Public Acceptance between Generic and Premium Branded GM Food Products: an Analytical Model

چکیده
Biotechnology is an enormously expanding discipline with various applications in the medical, agricultural and food sector. The use of genetic modification technology in food production is only one example, nevertheless a very important one. It offers new perspectives for product development, cost reduction and environmental protection. According to the White Paper, modern biotechnology includes an impulse for competitiveness and economic growth (European Commission, 1994). However, biotechnology in general and genetically modified (GM) food in particular came recently to the forefront of public attention. Abundant questions are being asked about safety for human health and for the environment, ethics, free consumer choice, socio-economic and legal issues. Public support is especially low for biotechnology applications in the food sector. Europeans show more concern and resistance towards GM food compared with other parts of the world (Table 3.1). These consumer concerns seriously jeopardize the future market success of modern biotechnology products, including GM food products (EFB Task Group on Public Perceptions of Biotechnology, 1998, 1999). Consequently, gaining insight into consumer beliefs, attitudes and behavioural intentions concerning GM food is essential.1 Against this background, the objective of this chapter is twofold:

A comparison of the cost of generic and branded food products in Australian supermarkets.
OBJECTIVE Food cost is an important factor influencing the consumption of nutritious foods and subsequent chronic disease risk. The present study compared the cost of branded food products with their generic equivalents across a range of food categories. SETTING The survey was conducted within two major supermarket chains across six locations in Sydney, Australia (n 12). DESIGN Price differ...

Auction experiments were used to examine demand and premium differences between organic, non-GM (genetically modified), and conventional versions for two pairs of fresh and processed foods. Results showed processed foods had greater substitutability among the versions than fresh products. Conventional versions were the least price sensitive, while non-GM versions were the most sensitive. Signif...
متن کاملAn Overview of Challenges in Producing and Consuming Transgenic Products
The production and consumption of genetically modified (GM) products are highly controversial due to their environmental, health, and ethical impacts. Most of these disputes are caused by distrust of regulatory authorities, scientists, and technocratic decisions. Among all these concerns, health issues, allergenicity and antibiotic resistance are more important. Many of today's social developme...
متن کاملStakeholders' Attitude to Genetically Modified Foods and Medicine
Public acceptance of genetically modified (GM) foods has to be adequately addressed in order for their potential economic and social benefits to be realized. The objective of this paper is to assess the attitude of the Malaysian public toward GM foods (GM soybean and GM palm oil) and GM medicine (GM insulin). A survey was carried out using self-constructed multidimensional instrument measuring ...
متن کاملConsumer acceptance, valuation of and attitudes towards genetically modified food: Review and implications for food policy
An increasing set of evidence has been reported on how consumers could potentially react to the introduction of genetically modified food. Studies typically contain some empirical evidence and some theoretical explanations of the data, however, to date limited effort has been posed on systematically reviewing the existing evidence and its implications for policy. This paper contributes to the l...
